The Swift Current Broncos continued to stockpile draft picks on Wednesday, prior to and during the opening round of the Western Hockey League Prospects Draft.
The Broncos made their second major trade of the day when they sent forward Luke Mistelbacher and defenseman Grayson Burzynski to the Brandon Wheat Kings in exchange from 2009 forward Alex Letourneau and five draft picks. Letourneau hails from Legal, AB and had 12 goals and seven assists in 38 games for the Fort Saskatchewan U18 AAA Rangers last season. He was the 103rd pick in the 2024 WHL Draft by the Wheat Kings.
The Broncos also received the 15th overall pick in 2025 and a second round pick, 37th overall in 2025. They also received third round picks in 2027 and 2028 and a sixth round pick in 2028.
The Broncos then moved down in the first round when they traded the 15th pick to the Saskatoon Blades for the 22nd pick, in addition to a fourth round and fifth round picks this year.
The Broncos eventually used the 22nd overall pick to draft 5’7” right wing Cohenn Rotar. The Grande Prairie, AB product registered 34 goals and 33 assists in 34 games with the GPAC Storm U15 AAA team this past season.
“He’s obviously an undersized guy for sure that has a high skill level, really good ceiling,” said Broncos General Manager Chad Leslie. “He’s a guy that we feel, again, is like a lot of the guys that we said goodbye to, that we’re going to have to be patient with them while they’re physically maturing. Then when they get to be 18.5, 19, 20 you see some real ceiling in them for sure.”
The Regina Pats used the first overall pick to select hometown star Maddox Schultz. Schultz tore up the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League with 43 goals and 50 assists in 44 games with the Regina Pat Canadians.
