Broncos destroy visiting Winterhawks

The Swift Current Broncos responded from a blowout loss on Friday with their highest scoring game since 2012 on Saturday.

Eight different Broncos scored in a 10-1 win over the visiting Portland Winterhawks. Rylan Gould and Luke Mistelbacher both registered two goals and one assist, while Clarke Caswell finished with four assists.

The Broncos took control with three goals in the first period, beginning with Sawyer Dingman’s third goal of the season, only 4:28 into regulation. Mistelbacher doubled the lead with his 30th goal and Hunter Mayo notched his first goal with the Broncos to close the period scoring.

The Broncos added to the lead 1:16 into the middle stanza when Mistelbacher struck for his second goal off a one-timer from the slot. Gould quickly struck for the fifth goal when he kept the puck on a two-on-one and found the top corner for his 15th goal. The Broncos greeted a new goaltender with a power play goal off the stick of Brady Birnie moments later. The Broncos added another power play goal moments later when Carlin Dezainde spun and scored after a lengthy scramble in the crease.

Kurt Rookes added to the lead with a one-time goal early in the third period. Josh Zakreski ruined the shutout bid with a power play goal for Portland before Jaxen Gauchier and Gould scored late to close the scoring.

Reid Dyck made 34 saves to improve to 14-15-1-0. Ondrej Stebetak took the loss with 13 saves on 18 shots to fall to 15-10-1-1 over 23:10. Marek Schlenker made 15 saves on 20 shots over the final 36:50.

The Broncos improved to 21-18-1-1 to remain in eighth spot in the Eastern Conference. Portland fell to 25-16-2-1 as they finished 4-2-0-0 on their East Division road trip.

The Broncos will visit the Saskatoon Blades on Sunday.
