World champions finish atop Western Showdown

A pair of world champion curlers came out on top of the 2025 RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown in Swift Current on Sunday.

Four-time women’s world champion skip Silvana Tirinzoni led her Swiss rink to the championship with a 4-3 win over Korea’s Seungyoun Ha on Sunday evening. The two teams traded points throughout the game before Tirinzoni scored one in the eighth end to clinch the win.

They had defeated Korean Bobae Kang 5-3 in the semi-final and Victoria’s Kayla MacMillan 6-2 in the quarter-final.

On the men’s side, reigning world champion Bruce Mouat defeated Saskatoon’s Rylan Kleiter 5-4 in the final with a steal of one in the final end.

Mouat had defeated Saskatoon’s Mike McEwen 7-3 in the quarter-final and a fellow Scottish rink skipped by Ross Whyte 7-0 in the semi-final.

The Steve Laycock rink featured Cabri’s Shaun Meachem and Swift Current’s Chris Haichert. They opened the Western Showdown with a 7-5 win over Italy’s Joel Retornaz on Thursday.

Friday, they were edged 8-7 by Switzerland’s Michael Brunner. They rebounded with a 7-4 win over Manitoba’s Jordan McDonald.

Laycock lost 5-2 to Scotland’s Ross Whyte on Saturday afternoon and then were eliminated by McEwen in a 9-5 loss on Saturday evening.
