Broncos announce suspension of head coach

The Swift Current Broncos announced the suspension of Head Coach Dean DeSilva on Wednesday, pending investigation of a matter related to the WHL Standards of Conduct during an on-ice practice.

The statement added that the team would not have further comment on the matter until the process is complete.

The Broncos were in the midst of a five-game losing streak when the suspension was announced. DeSilva is in his first season at the helm of the Broncos and the team was out to a 6-7-1-0 start.

The Broncos had a similar suspension of head coach Devan Praught in November of 2023 for an on-ice practice incident. The league eventually suspended Praught for five games. When the suspension ended the Broncos announced that they had mutually agreed with Praught to part ways.

Assistant coach Regan Darby will assume head coaching duties until further notice.

The Broncos opened a busy seven-day stretch with a 9-4 loss to the host Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday. The Broncos led 1-0 and 2-1 in the first period, before allowing the only four goals of the second period.

Marek Rocak, Jace McFaul, Caleb Potter, and Stepan Kuryachenkov scored in a losing cause. Joey Rocha took the loss with 14 saves on 20 shots over 27:31. Aides Eskit made 16 saves on 19 shots over the win 32:29.

Joby Baumuller, Cameron Allard, and Jaxon Jacobson all had two-goal outings for the home team. Carter Klippenstein, Nicholas Johnson, and Jimmy Egan also scored. Filip Ruzicka made 27 saves on 31 shots.

The Broncos fell to 6-8-1-0 with their sixth straight loss. Brandon improved to 7-7-1-0.

The Broncos will host the Calgary Hitmen on Friday to begin a stretch of three games in as many days.
