Broncos hold on for road win

The Swift Current Broncos scored the opening four goals and held on for a 5-4 win over the host Brandon Wheat Kings on Sunday afternoon.

The Broncos took the lead with power play goals from Zach Pantelakis and Stepan Kuryachenkov in the first period.

They stretched the lead early in the second period with goals from Josh McGregor and Sawyer Dingman. Former Bronco Luke Mistelbacher replied for the Wheat Kings, but Hudson Darby scored his fourth goal to restore the four-goal lead with the eventual game-winner. Caleb Hadland scored for the Wheat Kings for a 5-2 Bronco lead after two periods.

Joby Baumuller and Mistelbacher scored for Brandon to close the scoring in the third period.

Joey Rocha earned the win with 41 saves. Jayden Kraus made the start and allowed three goals on six shots over 22:47 for the Wheat Kings. Filip Ruzicka made nine saves on 11 shots over the final 34:23.

The Broncos finished two-for-five on the power play. They held the Wheat Kings off the score board on four man-advantages.

The Broncos improved to 5-3-0-0 to sit fifth in the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference. Brandon fell to 1-5-1-0 to sit 10th in the Eastern Conference.

The Broncos will host the Kamloops Blazers on Saturday.
