Rush Lake Compressor Station flaring early Oct. 1

SaskEnergy will be conducting controlled natural gas flaring at the Rush Lake Compressor Station located in the RM of Excelsior, approximately five kilometres north of the village of Rush Lake. Flaring will take place from 5 to 8 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026.The timing is subject to change based on operating requirements.

Residents and drivers in the area may see large flames being emitted from the two 40-foot flare stacks temporarily attached to SaskEnergy’s infrastructure at the site.

During this process, a portion of the gas line will be isolated from the system, and natural gas will be removed from the line in a controlled burn called a flare. Flaring is an industry standard practice that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 85 per cent compared to venting natural gas into the atmosphere.  

The flare is necessary to safely remove natural gas from SaskEnergy’s infrastructure prior to conducting planned maintenance on the natural gas system in the area. Scheduled maintenance on our facilities and infrastructure supports the safe and reliable year-round delivery of natural gas to customers across Saskatchewan.

The area around the flares will be supervised to ensure public safety. Residential natural gas service in the area will not be affected. SaskEnergy has notified the RM of Excelsior and the Herbert Fire Department about this upcoming event.
