Atom Broncos win silver at home tournament

The Swift Current Tarpon Energy AA Atom Broncos won silver at their eight-team home tournament over the weekend.

The Broncos opened their home tournament with a 9-1 win over Moose Jaw on Friday afternoon as Kaleigha Irwin earned the win in goal.

Jamie Kirwan led the way with two goals and two assists, followed by two goals from Taye Silbernagel. Carter Moen and Matty Schmiess each added a goal and an assist, while Kasey Gleim finished with two assists.

Ryder Leshures, Kadyn Olfert, and Dane Irwin also scored. Kyron Weston and Luke Lafontaine added single helpers.

Saturday, the Broncos added a 9-4 win over the Saskatoon Redwing Icewolves. Dane Irwin led the Broncos with two goals and two assists, followed by two goals and an assist from Kirwan. Gleim and Moen each added a goal and an assist, while Leshures chipped in a pair of assists. 

Tysen Kobley, Schmiess, and Silbernagel also scored, while Manning Unger added a single helper. Hudson Rijvers earned the win in goal.

They concluded the round robin with a 4-2 win over the Regina Shamrocks when four different players scored. Gleim, Moen, Schmiess, and Olfert all scored. Leshures, Kirwan, Laynee Rondeau, and Jaxson Squires added assists. Irwin earned her second win in goal.

The Broncos sailed past the Regina Royals 12-1 in the semi-final on Sunday morning. Gleim finished with three goals and one assist, Silbernagel added two goals and two assists, while Kirwan registered a hat trick and Kobley scored twice. Moen chipped in a goal and an assist, while Squires also scored. Dane Irwin and Schmiess each had two-assist outings, while Lafontaine and Rondeau added single helpers. Rijvers added his second win in goal.

The Atom Broncos lost the championship game 10-5 to the Saskatoon Wild Thunder on Sunday afternoon. Kirwan scored twice, Moen had a goal and an assist, while Gleim and Leshures also scored. Kaleigha Irwin took the loss in goal.

The Atom Broncos are currently first in the South East Atom Tier 1 Hockey League with a 7-1-0 record. They will host the Melville Millionaires on Dec. 14-15.
