Broncos swap import forwards with Giants

The Swift Current Broncos swapped 2001-born import forwards with the Vancouver Giants on Tuesday.

The Broncos sent Joona Kiviniemi to Vancouver and received Sergei Alkhimov and a sixth round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft.

Alkhimov has one assist, 10 penalty minutes, and a plus-five rating in 16 games this season with the Giants. The Moscow native had 13 goals and 14 assists in 66 games with the Regina Pats last season.

Kiviniemi finished with 22 goals and 13 assists in 77 career games with the Broncos. The Oulu, Finland product was leading the team with six goals and 10 points in 15 games this season.

“Sergei is a player that fits the mold of what we’re trying to build towards in Swift Current,” Broncos Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Dean Brockman said in a team issued statement. “He’s a player that works extremely hard and is excited to be a Swift Current Bronco. We’re very happy to have him in our organization.”

The Broncos will visit the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday. Alkhimov is expected to join the team for their weekend games in Regina and Moose Jaw.
