Locals dominate in Val Marie rodeo as Finals near

It was a successful homecoming for many of the Southwest competitors at the 55th annual Bob Larson Memorial Indoor Rodeo in Val Marie on September 20-21 as the Canadian Cowboys Association Finals approach.

The Southwest’s top event was Ladies Barrel Racing as four of the top five finishers came from the area. Cadillac’s Brooke Lange continued her spectacular season with a decisive win in 11.93 seconds for $501. Right behind her was Mankota’s April Williamson in second in 12.07 seconds for $414. Shaunavon’s Haley Glasrud followed in fourth in 12.23 seconds in $241. Waldeck’s Mallory Mallert rounded out the Southwest quartet in fifth spot in 12.3 seconds for $155.

Lang currently leads the event season standings, while Glasrud is seventh.

Maple Creek’s Mike Gordon come up with an event win in Saddle Bronc when he conquered Sandhill Saturday for 78 points to claim $614. Maple Creek’s Adam Gilchrist followed in fourth spot with 73 points aboard Colored Glasses for $330.

Lancer’s Chad Hartman added a win for the Southwest when he had one of two qualified rides on Dot Com for 82 points and $534.

Kyle’s Kade Cheney picked up another win in Novice Bareback with 70 points to collect $143.

Maple Creek’s William Perrin picked up 53 points to win Novice Saddle Bronc for $260 in Val Marie.

Cheney and Perrin both lead their respective events in the CCA season standings.

Mankota’s Shawn Williamson finished second in his backyard in Tie Down Roping in 9.6 seconds for $557. The veteran cowboy continues to lead the Tie Down Roping season standings as the season nears a conclusion.

Gilchrist also placed third in Steer Wrestling in 4.8 seconds for $219. Waldeck’s Tee McLeod followed in a fourth-place tie in 4.9 seconds for $72.

Shaunavon’s Jared Little was also third in Novice Bull Riding with 70 points for $100.

Waldeck’s Tuftin and Tyce McLeod placed fourth in Team Roping in 5.5 seconds for $801 as they continue to lead the Header and Heeler standings.

Maple Creek’s Blake Link added a fifth-place finish in Bareback with 75 points on Under Cover for a $145 payday.

Only two CCA rodeos remain in 2019, including the 51st Beechy Western Days on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The final CCA rodeo of 2019 is Dodge City Days in Wapella on October 4-5.
