The Swift Current 57’s scored six unanswered runs to end the Weyburn Beavers’ 16-game wining streak in the Western Canadian Baseball League on Sunday.

The 57’s trailed 5-0 in the third inning before Jack Large slugged a two-run home run and Tanner Holen hit an opposite field, three-run home run to hand the WCBL leading Beavers their first loss since their second game of the season.

“The guys came out and did a good job today,” said coach Joe Carnahan. “We were down early and you have got to give our guys credit, they stuck with it and had a couple big hits in the third and the fourth innings. Our bullpen came in and did a great job throwing up zeros.”

The bullpen was spectacular with six scoreless innings. Aaron Pugh was the first man out of gate and tossed two scoreless innings to get the win.

Garrett Alexander added four shutout innings as he struck out six to earn the save. The 6’6’’ Spring, Texas native struck out the final three batters with the bases loaded to improve the 57’s to 12-8 on the season. He now has a 1.84 earned run average in 14.2 innings pitched this season.

Garrett Alexander tossed four scoreless innings in a 6-5 win over the Weyburn Beavers on June 23, 2019.

The 57’s had defeated Weyburn on opening day before losing the next five games to the Beavers.

“When you’re facing the top team in the league you always want to get after them a little bit more. It was good that our guys came out on top today,” said Carnahan.

The 57’s will host the Moose Jaw Miller Express on Tuesday.
