SWAC volleyball teams advance to Regionals

Volleyball is the last fall sport and SWAC has been buzzing with volleyball playoffs this week. If you love volleyball, you had many chances to watch some of the best teams in the southwest compete.

The Senior Girls had their league championship on Tuesday, Oct. 30 in Gull Lake. #1 Gull Lake beat #4 Ponteix and #2 Vanguard beat #3 Hazlet in the first round. Ponteix and Hazlet met in a thrilling consolation final. Hazlet won in three sets (25-16, 25-18, 17-15). The championship match also went 3 sets. Congratulations to Gull Lake who won the league title over Vanguard (21-25, 25-22, 15-8).

The SWAC Junior teams held their championships on Saturday, Nov. 3. SCCHS grade 9’s (and Coach Cindy Lowe) won the girls championship over host Fox Valley by scores of 27-25, 25-23. It couldn’t have been any closer!!

The boy’s championship was in Frontier. SCCHS grade 9 boys (and Coach Brent Miller) won the championship over Shaunavon (22-25, 25-18, 15-7). Exciting volleyball from our junior players!!

All senior girl volleyball teams were at SHSAA Conference playoffs on Saturday. In 1A action, Consul, Cabri, and Hazlet did not advance to the playoff rounds. Vanguard/Hodgeville won the West Conference 1 championship hosted by Consul, and Fox Valley won the North Conference 3, hosted by Hazlet.

In 2A playoffs, Ponteix and Leader did not place in the top two qualifying spots. One of the most exciting championships was in Gull Lake. After round robin pool play, Gull Lake and Shaunavon met up in the semifinals. The two SWAC teams battled it out and Gull Lake came away with the win (2-1). Gull Lake then went on to win the 3A conference title.

In 4A action, Maple Creek was not in the top two and did not advance.

Gull Lake, Fox Valley and Vanguard have all won their way into Regional Girl Championships to be held on Nov. 10. Vanguard will host a 1A regional championship. Gull Lake and Fox Valley will be on the road to their regionals. That same weekend SCCHS Colts and Ardens will be at the 5A regional volleyball championships.

SWAC senior boy teams have their conference volleyball championships on the Nov. 9-10 weekend. Shaunavon will be hosting a 3A boy conference playoff on the 10th. All of our SWAC 1A boy teams will be in Beechy for their conference championship on Nov. 9-10. Draws will be posted on the SHSAA site early this week.

Curling practices, for junior and senior teams, can officially begin on Monday, Nov. 5.

Basketball and wrestling seasons are right around the corner. Those practices can begin on Monday, Nov. 19.
