Southwest cowboys top three events in Val Marie

The Canadian Cowboys Association was in Val Marie on September 14-15 for the Bob Larson Memorial Rodeo where Southwest cowboys won three events.

The Southwest swept the top two spots in Bareback, led by a 79-point ride from Maple Creek’s Brady Bertram for $443 in first place. Consul’s Monty Koopman was second after a 78-point ride aboard Sandhill City for $367. Brady Bertram sat second in the season standings, while Koopman sat seventh.

Maple Creek’s Hayden Briggs added a win in Bull Riding when he completed an eight-second ride on Grinding Gears for $496. The win moved Briggs into 10th spot in the season standings.

Three Southwest cowboys found the money in Team Roping in Val Marie. Shamrock’s Kevin Turner combined with Matt Switzer (Yorkton) to win the event in 5.8 seconds for $1,158. Mankota’s Shawn Williamson and Swift Current’s Blaine Switzer finished sixth in 7.1 seconds for $199.

Two Southwest cowboys placed in the Saddle Bronc pay window in Val Marie. Maple Creek’s Mike Gordon was second with 75 points on Dusty Day for $518. Piapot’s Casey Bertram tied for third with 74 points on Jail Break for $356. Casey Bertram was sitting second in the event season standings, while Gordon was ninth.

Maple Creek’s Janae Wilson placed second in Junior Girls Barrel Racing in 12.26 seconds for $135. She led all junior barrel racers with $6,253 on the season.

Maple Creek’s Blake Link added a second-place finish in Novice Bareback with a 52-point ride for $156. He leads the season standings with $2,058.

William Perrin, also riding out of Maple Creek, was second in Novice Saddle Bronc with 61 points for $156. He sits third in the season standings with $819.

Waldeck’s Tyce McLeod finished third in Tie Down Roping in 9.0 seconds for $324. McLeod was second in the Canadian High Point Award standings with $18,241 behind only Davidson’s Scott Sigfusson.

Consul’s Zane Tully was fourth in Novice Bull Riding with 76 points for $69. He sits fifth in the event season standings with $843.

Kyle’s Harrison Hantelman added a fourth-place finish in Steer Wrestling in 5.0 seconds for $249.
