The first Canadian Cowboys Association rodeo of the year took place in Tisdale on April 7-8.
A strong contingent of Southwest cowboys and cowgirls were in Tisdale for the Rambler Rodeo over the opening weekend of 2018.
Leading the way for the Southwest was Waldeck’s Tuftin McLeod with a win in Tie Down Roping in 9.4 seconds for $626. He was three-tenths of a second ahead of Jason Smith (Wimborne, AB) for top spot in the 14-man field.
Two Maple Creek cowgirls were amongst the top four finishers in Junior Girls Barrel Racing. Janae Wilson won the event in 13.5 seconds for $356. Lily Wilson was third in 13.97 seconds for $89.
There were 22 entries in the Team Roping field and Val Marie’s tandem of Riley Hayes and Colt Kornfeld placed second in 6.3 seconds for $1,105. Waldeck’s Tuftin and Scott McLeod were hot on their heels in third in 6.6 seconds for $875. Dustin Cromarty (Lumsden) and Jeffrey Eberts (Lumsden) won Team Roping in 5.9 seconds.
Cadillac’s Kelton Lang fought his way into some early season money with a third-place finish in Steer Wrestling in 6.5 seconds for $450. Cody Cassidy (Donalda, AB) won the event in 5.2 seconds.
Waldeck’s Mallory Mayert placed third out of 44 competitors in Ladies Barrel Racing in Tisdale. She clocked in at 13.56 seconds for $826. Mankota’s Bailey Briere finished in eighth spot in 13.83 seconds for $97. Local Dawn-Rae Gray (Tisdale) won her hometown rodeo in 13.46 seconds.
The CCA will be in North Battleford on April 27-29 for the Kinsmen Rodeo. The first CCA rodeo in the Southwest will be in Mankota on May 25-26.
