Nickel wins provincial wrestling championship

The Swift Current Comp. wrestling team brought home four medals from the 2018 SHSAA Provincial Wrestling Championships in Saskatoon.

Grade 11 Aleah Nickel led the way with gold in the 60 KG Girls Division.

Nickel defeated Saskatoon’s Taylor Kelly by tech fall 10-0 on Friday to open her provincial run. She added a 3-1 decision over Saskatoon Walter Murray’s Emma Parker to advance to the semi-final.

Nickel defeated Meadow Lake’s Skyla Russell in 51 seconds to reach the final.

She rematched with Parker in the gold medal match and won by injury to claim her first high school title after winning bronze and silver.

Sebastien Marchand won his first three matches to win silver in the 73 KG Boys Division.

Marchand needed just 2:46 to defeat Tommy Douglas’ Brayden Migneault by fall to open the weekend.

Marchand continued to roll with a 10-0 win over Prince Albert St. Mary’s Chad Bannerman. He faced Saskatoon Tommy Douglas’ Brayden Migneault in the semi-final and won 13-2 by tech fall.

Marchand took on Regina Campbell’s Ahswin Karunakaran in the gold medal match and lost by fall to bring home a silver medal.

Emmett Guider won bronze for the Colts in the 77 KG Boys Division.

Guider got a rematch with Prince Albert St. Mary’s Conley McLeod and avenged his regional final loss with a win by fall after 1:38 to open provincials.

He added a 10-0 tech fall win over Carlyle’s Manny Halbgewachs to reach the medal round.

Guider lost the semi-final by fall to Saskatoon Marion Graham’s Ian Finstad. He rematched with Halbgewachs for bronze and won 12-1 by tech fall.

Luke Nelson also won bronze for the Colts in the 65 KG Boys Division.

Nelson won his opening match 12-2 by tech fall over Simon Durand of Saskatoon Evan Hardy. He was defeated by fall to Saskatoon Holy Cross’ Gordon Laing. Nelson rebounded with a 16-5 tech fall win over Sebastian Bosch from Regina LeBoldus.

He lost the semi-final 10-0 to Regina O’Neill’s Nicholas Zimroz.
Nelson took on Meadow Lake’s Cody Barden for bronze and won 12-1 by tech fall.

Josh Keller represented the Colts in the 82 KG Boys Division. He dropped his opening match to McLurg’s Jon Huber by fall and then lost to Saskatoon Marion Graham’s Luke Neufeldt.

Colt Cornelson was on the mat for the Colts in the 53 KG Boys Division. He dropped his opener to Regina Thom’s Seungwon Lee. He was eliminated in a loss to Regina Winston Knoll’s Matthew Dishington.
