The Swift Current Abbey Resources Broncos defeated the visiting Estevan Bruins 2-1 to open the South Saskatchewan Midget AA Hockey League playoffs Tuesday.
Rhett Evjen shoveled home a rebound for the game winner early in the third period as Levi Lamotte and Riley Skarbon collected assists. Jacob Herman picked up the win with 29 saves on 30 shots.
Quinn Patenaude had given the Broncos an early lead with an unassisted goal, but Cale Adams tied it up for the Bruins in the first period.
Game two of the best-of-five series will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Fairview West Arena.
