Broncos dominate Raiders

The Swift Current Broncos scored four goals in the opening period to defeat the visiting Prince Albert Raiders 5-1 on Friday.

Glenn Gawdin opened the scoring only 22 seconds into regulation when the Broncos captain fired a shot five-hole for his 45th goal. Gawdin added his second of the game midway through the period when he wired home a top corner shot on a two-on-one rush. Giorgio Estephan added a third goal only 14 seconds later on a beautiful set-up from Beck Malenstyn. Estephan returned the favor minutes later when he sent an equally perfect pass to Malenstyn for a power play tip in for a 4-0 lead after one period.

The two teams traded goals in the middle stanza beginning with Kaden Elder’s 13th of the season 1:43 into the period. Justin Nachbaur replied for the Raiders with his seventh of the season.

Stuart Skinner made 29 saves to improve to 21-18-2-0, while Curtis Meager fell to 6-7-5-0 after allowing five goals on 35 shots.

Swift Current remains second in the WHL at 38-13-3-1, while the Raiders fell to 22-21-9-2.

The Broncos are back at home Saturday against the Brandon Wheat Kings.
