Broncos lose rematch with Warriors

The Swift Current Broncos six-game winning streak came to an end in an 8-2 loss to the host Moose Jaw Warriors Thursday. The Western Hockey League’s top team got goals from seven different skaters to defeat a shorthanded Broncos team one night after the Broncos had erased a three-goal deficit in a 5-4 shootout win in Swift Current.

The Broncos fell behind 2-0 early for a second straight night. Justin Almeida scored at the 5:47 mark and Dmitri Zaitsev scored only 49 seconds later. They increased their lead with a Jayden Halbgewachs goal 2:13 as he took the WHL goal scoring lead with his 36th of the season to pass the Broncos’ Tyler Steenbergen.

The Broncos cut into the lead in the second period with two goals, while Luka Burzan replied for the Warriors. Beck Malenstyn got the Broncos on the board with his first goal in his second game since joining the team. Kole Gable also netted his third goal of the season for a 4-2 deficit after two periods.

Halbgewachs, Tristin Langen, Oleg Sosunov, and Vince Loschiavo all added goals for the Warriors in the third period.

Brody Willms made 29 saves on 31 shots to improve to 21-5-2-1 for the Warriors.

The Broncos dropped to 26-8-2-0 as their six-game winning streak ended, to fall five point behind the Warriors (28-6-2-1) for to spot in the WHL.

The Broncos will be back at home Saturday to host the Saskatoon Blades.
