Steenbergen leads Broncos past Blades

The Swift Current Broncos will enter Saturday’s home opener with a flawless 4-0 record after a 6-2 win over the host Saskatoon Blades Friday.

Reigning Western Hockey League and Canadian Hockey League Player of the Week Tyler Steenbergen posted a second-period natural hat trick during his second straight four-goal outing. Steenbergen, 19, now has 10 goals and six assists in four games to open the season.

Linemate Glenn Gawdin opened the scoring and finished with three points, while Aleksi Heponiemi added three assists. Kaden Elder also scored for the Broncos.

Braylon Shmyr and Brady Goethals replied for the Blades as they fell to 1-3-0-0. Joel Grzybowski took the loss with 15 saves on 21 shots.

Logan Flodell improved to 3-0 with the Broncos as he made 19 saves in his first outing against his former team.

The Broncos will host the Kootenay Ice in their home opener on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Innovation Credit Union iplex.
