The Swift Current Comp. Ardens soccer team opened their Moose Jaw League season with two home wins over the Weyburn Eagles Saturday.
The eight-time defending league champions won the opener 4-0, led by two goals from 2016 league scoring champion Lauryn Hayes. Striker Jannae Carlson and rookie Taylor Kohls also scored, while Jaden McKenzie earned the shutout in goal behind a dominant performance from the Ardens’ fullbacks. Ali Vance set up two goals, while MJ Anderson added the other assist.
The Ardens struggled to execute even the most basic plays in game two, but still grinded out a 3-1 win. Allison Wall scored the only goal of the first half when she slammed home a rebound in the 29th minute. The Ardens hit their first hint of adversity when Weyburn scored from distance in the 65th minute to even the game. The Ardens answered back quickly when Hayes scored one minute later to regain the lead and then the grade 12 striker sealed the game with her fourth goal of the day in the 88th minute. Hayes also assisted the opening goal, while Carlson assisted the final two goals.
The Ardens are off to Moose Jaw next weekend for a 16-team tournament that will feature many of the top teams in the province.
