McLeod ropes in early CCA money

The Canadian Cowboys Association recently returned to the arena with the first two rodeos of 2017.

Highlighting the results at the opener in Tisdale for the Southwest was a win in Tie Down Roping for Waldeck’s Tuftin McLeod. The decorated cowboy won Tie Down in 9.4 seconds ahead of 13 other cowboys to collect $626 to open the season.

He also combined with Moose Jaw’s Garrett Brownlee to place fifth in Team Roping in 10.8 seconds for $427.

Abbey’s Blake Smith added a win in Novice Bull Riding when he totaled 74 points for $189.

Kyle’s Chad Hantelman was in the money in Tisdale with a fourth-place finish in Steer Wrestling. The veteran cowboy got the job done in 16.2 seconds to take home $315. Stonewall’s Scott Harris and Hanley’s Brian McPhee tied for top spot in 4.5 seconds.

The second rodeo of the season took place on April 14-15 in Pierson, MB where Tuftin McLeod won money in both events for a second straight weekend. He and Brownlee were second in Team Roping in 5.7 seconds for $1,088. Scott and Tee McLeod followed in third spot in 6.0 seconds for $861.

Mankota’s Shawn Williamson hit the pay window in Tie Down Roping in 9.5 seconds to place third for $324. Right behind him was Tuftin McLeod in fourth spot in 10.2 seconds for $162. Indian Head’s Bruce Dunham won the event in 8.2 seconds.

Maple Creek’s Janae Wilson was third in Junior Girls Barrel Racing in 12.81 seconds for $108. Waskada’s Laramie Lockie won the event in 12.73 seconds.

Cadillac’s Kelton Lang added a fourth place finish in Steer Wrestling in 4.9 seconds for $135. MRCA competitor Steven Cowan won the event in 4.3 seconds.
