Bantam Broncos compete at Westerns

The Swift Current Kabos Broncos were unable to produce a win at the 2017 Western Canada Bantam AAA Championships in Warman.

The Broncos lost their tournament opener 5-0 to the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers on Thursday. Rookie forward Hayden Wilm was named the Player of the Game for the Broncos.

The Broncos were back on the ice Friday but lost 5-3 to the Winnipeg Monarchs. The Monarchs scored the first five goals before the Broncos replied with the final three goals. Mac Gross and Riley Dekowny each had a goal and an assist, while defenseman Hendrik de Klerk added two assists and was named the Player of the Game. Rhett Evjen also scored, Wilm added an assist, and Justin Dueck made 28 saves on 33 shots.

The Broncos faced the Burnaby Winter Club on Saturday morning and lost 3-2. They tied the game twice but allowed the only goal of the third period to suffer the loss.

Reed Jacobson had a goal and an assist and was named the Player of the Game. Evjen also had a goal and an assist. Gross and Tanner Funk each added assists and Jacob Herman made 29 saves on 32 shots.

The Broncos concluded their tournament with a 5-1 loss to the host Sask Valley Vipers. Wilm scored an unassisted goal to open the scoring before the Vipers replied with five unanswered goals. Dueck made 36 saves and Gross was named the Player of the Game for the Broncos.

The Broncos had finished second in the Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey League regular season with a 19-4-4 record. They won the league championship with an 8-2 record, defeating Estevan, the Regina Monarchs, Prairie Storm, and Sask Valley Vipers in the post-season.
