The City of Swift Current is announcing it has made the decision to discontinue the Safe Places program effective April 1, 2025. After a full review of the program with the City Solicitor and insurance providers, it was concluded that Safe Places is no longer sustainable from a liability or financial perspective as a part of City operations.
The City would like to acknowledge the work of numerous staff members for their dedication, as well as extend a heartfelt thank you to the partners and organizations who embraced this initiative and advanced this program. Remembering its origins, purpose, and its role in rebuilding community trust, an improved accountability standard has been set with the expectation that all youth service providers will continue to place the highest importance on maintaining diligent screening processes, policies, and procedures to ensure the safety of our youth.
Resources for community organizations, such as “Respect in Sport” training created by Respect Group Inc., will remain accessible at www.safeplaces.ca for the time being. However, Safe Places Certification applications will no longer be processed as of April 1, 2025. Individuals will be able to access their Safe Places account until June 1, 2025.
“Being unable to secure insurance toward the Safe Places certification program has led to its unavoidable end,” explains City of Swift Current Mayor, Al Bridal.
