Ross wins bronze at SHSAA golf provincials

The first official SWAC sport playoff, golf, was held at the Cypress Hills Golf Course, commissioned by Tyson Krause (Maple Creek School).There were over 50 golfers (grades 9-12) who took part in the 18 hole competition.

District female champion is Claire Topham (Eastend) and the male champion is Ayden Ross (SCCHS). Also advancing to SHSAA Provincials at Northern Meadows Golf Course (Goodsoil) were female golfers Kayden Meyer (SCCHS) and Dayanara Pahtayken (MCCS) and male golfers Matty Schmiess (SCCHS), Kalen Cocks (Leader) and Trehvan McMorris (SCCHS).

Due to weather postponements for our district championship, our provincial team had a very short turn around to prepare for the SHSAA provincial golf championship in Goodsoil. The golf team was very competitive and had strong showings at provincials. They competed against the top school 70+ male and top 50+ female golfers in the province.

Congratulations to Ayden Ross (SCCHS) who tied for the bronze medal in the boys individual competition. Matty was 12th, Kalen 44th and Trehvan 52nd. Top finisher in the girls competition was Kayden (13th), Claire finished 16th and Dayanara was 29th. The SWAC girls team finished sixth overall and the boys were seventh.

SWAC hosted its first “Junior Golf District” tournament. It was held after school on Wednesday, Sept. 25 in Eastend. There were 21 junior golfers in attendance who played nine holes. Overall boys champion was Kellen Ross (Shaunavon High) and overall girls champion was Jane Topham (Eastend).

Grade 4 boys champion was Tyler Topham (Eastend), Grade 5 boy champion was Sammie Siefert (Consul). The grade 6 boy champion was a tie between Cooper Lundsten (Eastend) and Nash Aadland (Shaunavon Public). Grade 7 boy champion was Gavin Lacey (Eastend).

The SWAC Cross Country meet will be held on Wednesday, October 2 on the Fox Valley golf course (commissioner Megan Schmaltz – Fox Valley School). SWAC has nearly 200 runners taking part – incredible entry numbers. The walkthrough will be at 11:30 and the first races will start immediately after that (noonish). The intermediate/junior/senior girls and boys will run first as a group, followed by four age group races: pee wee boys, pee wee girls, bantam boys and bantam girls. The top 10 intermediate, junior and senior runners in each age group will advance to the SHSAA Provincial Championship on October 12 (Dixon Hills near Humboldt).

SCCHS Colts soccer team beat the Moose Jaw boys on Tuesday, Sept 24 in Moose Jaw League play. The Colts were in Moose Jaw for a double header on Saturday. They beat Yorkton Regional (4-1) and lost a close one to Yorkton Sacred Heart (2-1). The Colts are on the road Tuesday, Oct. 1 back to Moose Jaw to take on Weyburn boys.

In football action, the Swift Current 12-man football team were on the road to Weyburn this weekend. The Colts were close until midway through the fourth quarter. The final score was 41-16 for Weyburn. SCCHS will host Greenall on Saturday, October 5 before heading into their bye week on Thanksgiving weekend.

SWAC’s three 9-man teams all played on Friday, Sept 27, Gull Lake hosted Shaunavon and lost (70-13) and Maple Creek lost at home to Moose Jaw Vanier (30-15). On Friday, October 11 Gull Lake will host Notre Dame, Maple Creek will be on the road to Lumsden and Shaunavon will play hometown Moose Jaw Vanier.

Volleyball programs are underway at our junior and senior schools. Junior leagues are organized at the local/sectional level.

SWAC Senior volleyball leagues started this week for our 7 girls teams and 5 boys teams. On Tuesday, Sept 24 the girls played. Frontier defeated Shaunavon (2-1) and (2-0), Vanguard over Herbert (2-0) and Gull Lake (2-1), Herbert beat Gull Lake (2-1), Consul beat Maple Creek (2-0, 2-1).
The boys took to the court for their first league matches on Wednesday Sept 25. Frontier won over Consul (2-1) and Ponteix (2-1), Consul defeated Ponteix (2-0) and Cabri beat Herbert (2-0 and 2-0).

Hosts for week two of girls league are: Consul (hosting Gull Lake and Frontier), Vanguard hosting Shaunavon and Herbert hosting Maple Creek. Our boys host sites are Ponteix (Herbert and Cabri attending) and Consul will host Frontier.
