Broncos close ground on Warriors with fourth straight win

The Swift Current Broncos pulled within four points of third place in the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference with a 5-2 win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors on Monday.

The Broncos were led by four assists from Conor Geekie and goals from five different skaters for their fourth straight win.

The Broncos took a 3-1 lead in the first period. They opened the scoring with a power play goal goal from captain Owen Pickering. Brayden Schuurman tied the game 32 seconds later. The Broncos regained the lead with a Brady Birnie goal and then doubled the lead with a Connor Hvidston goal in the dying seconds of the period, his 23rd of the season.

The Warriors closed the gap in the second period with an Owen Berge at the 2:50 mark.

The Broncos doubled the lead again with a between the legs pass from Geekie to Ty Coupland for his 10th goal early in the third period. Ryan McCleary added an empty net goal to make it 5-2 for the Broncos.

Reid Dyck made 25 saves to improve to 16-6-2-0 for the Broncos. Jackson Unger took the loss with 22 saves to fall to 28-12-0-2.

The Broncos improved to 30-19-3-2, while Moose Jaw fell to 34-18-4-2

The Broncos will host the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday.
