Broncos lose another overtime game

The Swift Current Broncos power play and overtime woes continued on Saturday as they lost 5-4 to the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings.

The two teams combined for four goals in the opening period, beginning only 36 seconds in with a Nicholas Johnson goal for the visitors. Clarke Caswell equalized for the Broncos with his 15th goal, but Nolan Flamand replied for Brandon with a power play goal. The Broncos tied the game for a second time when Josh Filmon converted a Mathew Ward pass into an empty goal for his 22nd of the season.

The Broncos scored the opening goal of the second period when Rylan Gould finished off another pretty three-way passing play for his 15th goal. The Wheat Kings tied the game late in the period with a Jayden Wiens goal.

The Wheat Kings took another lead 1:07 into the third period when Brett Hyland scored on a three-on-two rush. Gould tied the game again midway through the third period with a one-timer for his 16th goal.

Brandon earned the extra point in overtime after possessing the puck for two full minutes until Nolan Flamand split three Broncos and scored on the backhand.

Joey Rocha made nine saves on 12 shots over the opening two periods for the Broncos. Reid Dyck played the final 22 minutes and made 10 saves on 12 shots. Ethan Eskit made 26 saves for Brandon.

The Broncos fell to 24-18-4-2 as their two-game winning streak came to an end, while Brandon improved to 24-18-5-1. The Broncos are now 1-4 in games decided in overtime this season.

The Broncos finished zero-for-seven on the power play as the unit is now second worst in the WHL at 18.8 percent.

The Broncos will continue the five-game home stand on Tuesday when they host the Red Deer Rebels.
