Dillion Heatherington has earned a third opportunity to represent his country. The former Swift Current Broncos defenseman will skate for Canada at the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland next week.
Heatherington, 28, has two goals and two assists in 24 games this season with the Belleville Senators in the American Hockey League.
Canada will open the 2023 Spengler Cup against Frölunda HC on Dec. 26 at 2:15 p.m. ET/11:15 a.m. PT. Canada, coached by Bruce Boudreau, will also face HC Davos in the preliminary round.
Heatherington previously represented Canada at the U18 and U20 levels, winning gold on both occasions, including World Junior gold in 2015 in Toronto.
Heatherington played four seasons in Swift Current from 2011-15. The 6’4’’ blueliner was drafted in the second round in 2013 by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Now in his third season in the Ottawa Senators organization, the Calgary product has seen NHL time with the Dallas Stars and Senators. His AHL stops also include the Springfield Falcons, the Lake Erie Monsters, the Cleveland Monsters, and the Texas Stars. Heatherington also played one season in the Kontinental Hockey League in 2020-21.
