Some of the world’s top curlers will be in Swift Current this week for the Nutrien Ag Solutions Western Showdown on December 6-10.
The men’s tournament will include teams from Switzerland, the United States, Sweden, Korea, Italy, and Japan.
Highlighting the men’s field will be six-time world champion Niklas Edin from Sweden. The Swedish rink won the event in 2022 with only three players after the skip was injured one week before coming to Swift Current. They defeated two-time world champion Kevin Koe in the championship game.
A Fox Valley rink will feature Carl deConinck, Ryan Deis, and Kalin Deis.
The Laycock rink will feature Cabri’s Shaun Meachem and Swift Current’s Chris Haichert.
The womens’ tournament includes teams from the United States, Italy, Japan, Korea, China, Sweden, Switzerland.
Swift Current’s Kelly Schafer, fresh off winning a Mixed National Championship on home ice, will play third for the Robyn Silvernagle rink out of North Battleford.
The tournament begins on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. with five games. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday will feature draws at 8 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 2 p.m., 5:45 p.m. and 9 p.m.
The playoffs will open on Sunday with the quarter-finals at 9 a.m. and the semi-finals at 12:30 p.m. The mens and womens championship games will begin at 4 p.m.
