Swift Current’s Aleah Nickel won gold at the 2023 Francophone Games in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Nickel, who was Canada’s flag bearer at the event, won four straight matches to claim gold in the 62 kilogram womens wrestling event.
She opened her run with a 12-2 win over Diwa Mervedie Mbemba from the host country.
Nickel won in round two by disqualification over Guinea’s Fatoumata Yarie Camara.
She added a win by fall in the semi-final over Burkino Faso’s Salmantou Coulibaly.
Nickel clinched gold with a championship win by tech fall over Congo’s Mbemba again.
