Legionnaires collect league hardware

Two members of the Swift Current Home Hardware Legionnaires were recognized with Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League awards after a bounce back season for the team.

First-year head coach Todd Hornung received the Joe Bloski Coach of the Year Award. Hornung led the Legionnaires to a 25-15-4 record this season, an 11-point improvement from last season when they missed the playoffs in ninth place.

Rookie netminder Berney Weston collected the Goaltec MVP Goalie Award. The Swift Current Broncos prospect posted a 20-7-2 record with a 2.86 goals against average and a .909 save percentage this season. The Gull Lake product was also named a Second Team All Star.

Shaunavon’s Nolan Stevenson was named a First Team All Star and won the Top Defenseman Award. The Swift Current Broncos draft pick was second amongst SMAAAHL defensemen with 40 points in 43 games in his third with the Regina Pat Canadians.

Swift Current’s Ryder Knutson was named a Second Team All Star and won the Adam Herold Memorial Award. He led all league defensemen with 41 points in 44 regular season games with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Legionnaires are back at home on Tuesday as they attempt to complete a three-game sweep of the Warman Wildcats in the opening round of the playoffs.
