Broncos power past Tigers to reclaim playoff position

The Swift Current Broncos moved back into a playoff position with a 5-2 win over the host Medicine Hat Tigers on Tuesday.

The Broncos struggling power play unit connected for three goals to help secure a second straight win.

Drew Englot got the Broncos on the board early with a power play goal, his sixth goal of the season. They doubled the lead late in the period when captain Owen Pickering connected for his ninth goal.

The Broncos added a pair of goals in the second period, beginning with a power play goal from Josh Filmon, his team leading 38th of the season. Grayson Burzynski added a fourth goal midway through the period. The Tigers got on the score sheet late in the middle stanza with a power play goal from Tyler Mackenzie.

Filmon added another power play goal in the third period to help seal the win. Oasis Wiesblatt responded for the Tigers with a second goal with 5:23 remaining in regulation.

Reid Dyck improved to 12-18-1-0 with 32 saves. Beckett Langkow took the loss with 13 saves on 18 shots.

The Broncos finished three-for-six on the power play, while the Tigers connected once on seven man-advantages. Pickering assisted on all three power play goals during a four-point outing. The Broncos are now 5-0-0-1 against the Tigers with two games remaining in the season series.

The Broncos moved past Calgary and Medicine Hat to sit seventh in the Eastern Conference with a 27-27-1-2 record. Medicine Hat fell to 24-24-8-1 in the eighth and final playoff position.

The Broncos will visit the last-place Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday with only 11 games remaining in the regular season.

Bronco Bits: Mathew Ward had three assists in the win and now has 41 assists in 57 games. The Broncos and Tigers will play a home-and-home set to conclude the regular season.
