Schafer competes at Scotties Tournament of Hearts

Swift Current’s Kelly Schafer represented Saskatchewan at the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Kamloops.

Schafer played third on Robyn Silvernagle’s rink curling out of the Twin Rivers Curling Club in North Battleford. They were joined by lead Kara Thevenot and second Sherry Just. The team was also supported by alternate Skylar Ackerman and coach Pat Simmons.

Saskatchewan finished with a 2-6 record in Kamloops. They opened the event with a 12-7 loss to Nova Scotia’s Christina Black.

They rebounded the following day with an 11-9 win over Alberta’s Kayla Skrlik. Saskatchewan had a four-point ninth end to lead 9-6 until Alberta scored three in the 10th. Saskatchewan clinched the win with two points in the extra end.

Saskatchewan proceeded to suffer four straight losses, including an 11-6 defeat to British Columbia’s Clancy Grandy, a 9-5 loss to Quebec’s Laurie St-Georges, an 8-3 loss to wildcard entry Kaitlyn Lawes, and a 10-3 loss to Canadian champion Kerri Einarson.

They were back into the win column with a 13-4 victory over Nunavut’s Brigitte MacPhail. Saskatchewan closed out the win with seven points in the eighth end.

Saskatchewan concluded the round robin with a 7-6 loss to Prince Edward Island’s Suzanne Birt.

Einarson won Pool A with a 7-0 record. Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville and Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones topped Pool B with 7-1 records. The playoffs will continue on Friday with the final set for Sunday evening.
