Broncos end U.S. road trip on a winning note

The Swift Current Broncos concluded their five-game U.S. Division road trip with a 3-1 win over the host Spokane Chiefs on Friday.

The Broncos finished the trip with only three of a possible 10 points in the United States after scoring the first three goals against the Chiefs.

Connor Hvidston scored the opening goal 5:44 into the first period. Call-up Ty Coupland scored the eventual game-winner midway through the opening stanza. The 2022 draft pick (42nd overall) scored a power play goal in his second Western Hockey League game.

Brady Birnie added an insurance goal in the second period as the Broncos snapped a four-game losing streak.

Tommaso De Luca replied for the Chiefs with the only goal of the third period.

Broncos rookie Joey Rocha earned the win with 24 saves on 25 shots to improve to 6-2-0-1. Cooper Michaluk made 29 saves for the Chiefs.

The Broncos remain in eighth spot in the Eastern Conference with a 23-21-1-2 record. Spokane fell to 9-33-2-2 on the season with their fifth straight loss.

The Broncos will be back at home on Friday to host the Prince Albert Raiders.
