Coward, Lind, and Pickering all invited to Team Canada Summer Camps

Two Southwest skaters and one member of the Swift Current Broncos will have tryouts for Team Canada this summer.

Shaunavon’s Kalan Lind was invited to the Canadian Men’s Under-18 Team Selection Camp. The camp will take place July 20-27 in preparation for 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

Lind, a 6’ forward, will be one of 44 players trying out for the U18 National Team. The Red Deer Rebels rookie posted 20 goals and 18 assists in 61 regular season games. He added six points in 10 playoff outings.

The 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup will be held on July 31 – August 6 in Red Deer.

Swift Current’s Chase Coward and Broncos defenseman Owen Pickering have both been invited to the Canadian National Junior Team Summer Camp from July 23-27 in advance of the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Coward, a 6’2’’ goaltender from the Red Deer Rebels, finished with a 22-10-2 record during his first full WHL season. He posted a 2.51 goals against average and a .906 save percentage. Coward added a 2.24 GAA and a .925 save percentage in eight playoff outings.

Pickering is a 6’5’’ defenseman from St. Adolphe, Man. He was a breakout star with the Broncos this season with nine goals and 24 assists in 62 regular season games this past season. Pickering is projected to be selected in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft on July 7 in Montreal.

The 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship will be held in Halifax and Moncton from Dec. 26 – January 5.

The WHL also announced that the 2022-23 regular season will begin on Friday September 23.

The Broncos are scheduled to play four pre-season games, beginning September 9 when they visit the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Broncos will host the Warriors the following evening.

The Broncos will also host the Medicine Hat Tigers on September 16 and conclude the preseason the following evening in Medicine Hat.
