Sara Kendall helped the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s hockey team win their second medal at Nationals in program history.
The fifth seeded Huskies completed their unlikely playoff run with bronze at the U Sports Women’s Ice Hockey National Championship hosted by the University of Prince Edward Island on March 24-27.
The Ponteix native scored the eventual game-winning goal in the second period during a 4-0 win over the Brock University Badgers in the quarter-final on Friday afternoon.
Saskatchewan lost 2-0 to Concordia in the semi-final on Saturday.
Sunday, the Huskies defeated the University of New Brunswick 2-0 to secure bronze. Camryn Drever made 17 saves for her fourth shutout in nine playoff outings.
The Huskies had placed fifth in the Canada West regular season with an 11-7-1-0-2-0 record.
They moved past Manitoba in the opening round of the playoffs before upsetting top ranked Mount Royal in the semi-final. They lost both games to UBC in the championship series.
Kendall skated with the U18 AAA Wildcats for three seasons from 2017-20, recording 47 points in 30 games in her final season. The Ponteix native is in her second season with the Huskies, but did not play any games last season due to the pandemic. She scored twice in six regular season games this season, before suiting up for three games in the Canada West playoffs.
