Four Swift Current United Soccer Club teams took part in the Lakewood Just Kick It Cup in Saskatoon over the weekend.
The U17 Girls won all five matches to win the tournament. They defeated Yorkton United FC 3-1 on Friday to open the weekend. They added a 3-0 win over the Saskatoon Lakewood Pride on Saturday morning. They closed out the round robin with a 5-0 win over Saskatoon’s Aurora Impact that evening.
The U17 United Girls took on Prince Albert Celtic in the semi-final and advanced with a 2-1 win in a shootout. They faced Yorkton United FC again in the championship match and won 2-0 to clinch the tournament title.
The Swift Current U15 Girls placed second in the four-team event. They opened the tournament with a 6-2 win over the WHU SC. Jaycee Berggren scored four goals, while Tenille Willows and Brooke Wagnar added singles.
They added a 7-0 win over the Lakewood Marvel later that evening. Berggren notched a hat trick, Willows found the back to net twice, while Mapalo Mushoriwa scored twice as well. They lost 4-1 to Coaldale’s Tempest FC in their final game of the round robin as Berggren scored for a third straight game.
The two teams rematched in Sunday’s final and Swift Current lost in a shootout. Willows scored twice, while Mushoriwa added a single.
The U17/U19 Boys won their first three matches to place second out of six teams at the Just Kick It Cup.
They opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over Nipawin FC on Friday evening. They remained unbeaten on Saturday with a 4-2 win over Lakewood Real. They wrapped up an unbeaten round robin with a 2-0 win over Hollandia Chen on Sunday morning.
The U17/19 Boys dropped the final 4-2 to Lakewood Atletico to bring home silver.
The U13 Girls won their opener 3-0 over Saskatoon’s Eastside Bilbao on Friday afternoon. They fell 2-1 to Saskatoon’s Aurora Ice that evening. The U13 United Girls were eliminated in a 2-1 loss to the Lakewood Fusion on Saturday.
