Southwest volleyball players contributing at highest levels

A number of Southwest volleyball players are currently competing in U Sports and south of the border.

Swift Current’s Dylan Mortensen continues to be a driving force for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The third-year outside hitter is currently leading all U Sports players in kills with 177, well ahead of UBC’s Matt Neaves, who is second with 141. The 6’7’’ business student leads Canada West with 209 points, is fourth in kills per set, and seventh in service aces.

The Huskies are currently fifth in Canada West with a 6-6 record. Swift Current’s Dayton Patzer is also a first-year outside hitter with the Huskies.

Swift Current’s Braedon Friesen has emerged in his second season with the University of Alberta Golden Bears. The 6’7’’ outside hitter has appeared in 10 of 12 matches and is tied for third on the team with 69 kills and is fourth with 81 points. He also has eight service aces. The Golden Bears are currently fourth in Canada West with an 8-4 record.

Freshman Henry Rempel has appeared in all 12 matches for the Trinity Western Spartans this season. Trinity Western is currently ranked first in the country with an 11-1 record in Canada West.

The 6’5’’ Swift Current product has 16 kills, one ace, and eight digs in his debut season.

Wymark’s Brittany Rousseaux is also in her third season with the University of Regina Cougars. She has appeared in 11 of 12 matches and has 42 kills, seven service aces, and 40 blocks this season for the Cougars, who have a 2-10 record.

Swift Current’s Deserae Unger is now in her second season with the University of Brandon Bobcats.

The 6’0’’ middle is fifth on the team with 50 kills. She also has 19 digs and 23 total blocks. Unger has seven service aces and is third on the team with 70.5 points in 12 matches this season. The Bobcats are currently 2-10 in Canada West.

Swift Current’s Mackenzie Froehlich has taken over the starting setter duties for the Minot State University Beavers in her third season south of the border. She has 796 assists this season to go along with 33 kills and nine service aces. She also has 215 digs, and 31 total blocks. The Beavers are currently 2-18 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
