Mortensen swinging away at Summer Universiade in Italy

Swift Current’s Dylan Mortensen has been playing a prominent role for Canada men’s volleyball team at the Summer Universiade in Napoli, Italy.

Canada has a 1-2 record so far and Mortensen has been one of their top offensive players.

Canada opened the round robin on Saturday with a four-set loss to volleyball powerhouse Brazil (13-25, 25-18, 21-15, 18-25). Mortensen led Canada with 20 points in the loss, including 15 kills, three blocks, and two service aces.

Canada fell to 0-2 with a four-set set loss to France (18-25, 27-25, 17-25, 20-25) on Sunday. Mortensen was responsible for six points in the loss.

Mortensen and Canada got into the win column on Monday with a five-set win over the Islamic Republic of Iran (20-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 15-10). Mortensen was tied for second with 20 points in the victory. The 6’7’’ outside attacker led the team with 16 kills against Iran.

Canada will face Poland on Tuesday to conclude the round robin.

Mortensen also suited up for Canada’s National Men’s B Team at the Pan American Cup in Colima, Mexico last month. He will enter his third season with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in the fall.
