Two former members of the Swift Current Broncos will skate in the 2018 U Sports University Cup, which will be hosted by the University of New Brunswick on March 15-18 in Fredericton.
Defenseman Graeme Craig helped lead the University of Alberta Golden Pandas to their second straight Canada West title with a two-game sweep of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
Craig registered 13 points, 45 penalty minutes and a plus-17 rating in 27 regular season games with the Golden Bears. He added a goal and two assists during four post-season contests.
The 6’5’’Red Deer native played parts of four seasons with the Broncos before moving on to the Saskatoon Blades and Prince Albert Raiders. He also skated professionally for the Oklahoma City Barons and Bakersfield Condors before joining the Golden Bears.
The Golden Bears were ranked second in the nation last week, trailing only the host Varsity Reds. They will open the tournament against Concordia on Thursday evening in the second quarter-final. The Golden Bears enter the tournament with a 23-4-1 record
Former Bronco Andrew Johnson scored two of the Huskies three goals during the Canada West championship series. He had posted six points in 13 regular season games.
Johnson is a third-year forward from Saskatoon who played for the Moose Jaw Warriors and Seattle Thunderbirds before playing in 80 games with the Broncos in 2013-14.
Swift Current’s Mackenzie Johnston also suited up for 13 regular season games with the Huskies this season with seven points and a plus-six rating. He had played for Mount Royal University for two seasons from 2014-16.
Johnson played five seasons in the WHL with the Kelowna Rockets, Prince Albert Raiders, and Saskatoon Blades.
Hazlet’s Andrew Bailey, a former member of the Huskies, is now an assistant coach with his former team.
The Huskies were ranked fifth in the country in the most recent rankings with a 20-7-1 record. They will meet McGill in the last quarter-final on Friday evening.
