The Swift Current Comp. Junior Colts basketball team won two of three games at their six-team home tournament over the weekend.
The Colts dropped their opener by a single point in a 65-64 loss to Moose Jaw Vanier on Friday. Austin Wiebe led the Colts with 16 points, followed by a 14-point outing from Dawson Schultz.
The Colts bounced back Saturday with a 62-50 win over the Estevan Elecs. Carl Soriano notched 20 points, followed by 15 from Wiebe. The Colts led 40-38 after three quarters before using their full court press early in the fourth quarter to go on a 10-0 run to create much needed cushion.
The Colts concluded the tournament with a 64-58 win over the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones. Wiebe led the way with 18 points, followed by 17 from Soriano in another competitive game.
“The Cyclones had the size advantage but we were able to spread them out when we were on offense and create driving and passing lanes. Our defensive rebounding was much improved, limiting the Cyclones’ second shot opportunities,” noted head coach Adam Jackson.
The Colts will be in Medicine Hat for a tournament on Jan. 12-13, followed a trip to Weyburn the next weekend.
“The ‘rust’ from the break was evident in our shooting and defensive rotations. We will need to work on our on-ball defense this week as we prepare for a tournament in Medicine Hat,” said Jackson.
