Broncos shutout Thunderbirds

Cal Conway stopped all 34 shots he faced for his first Western Hockey League shutout in the Swift Current Broncos’ 3-0 win over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds on Wednesday.

After 49 scoreless minutes, Clarke Schaefer finished off a pretty three-way passing play from Trae Wilke and Kayd Ruedig to open the scoring 9:13 into the third period. Daxon Yerex doubled the scoring 22 seconds later when his screened point shot found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Carter Moen closed the scoring with an empty net goal.

The Broncos failed to score on three power plays, but killed off both Seattle man-advantages.

Grayson Malinowski took the loss with 29 saves on 31 shots. Conway improved to 10-3 in 14 appearances since joining the Broncos in the off-season from the Wenatchee Wild for his second WHL season.

The Broncos improved to 10-5-0-0 to sit tied for first with 20 points in the Eastern Conference. Seattle fell to 4-7-0-1.

The Broncos will host the Everett Silvertips on Friday.
