A pair of Swift Current basketball players have been spending the summer playing with Team Saskatchewan.
Jayda Jago is playing for the 13U Girls, coached by Alex Taylor and Hailey Somers.
In June, they placed first in the 13U Central Canadian Classic in Winnipeg with a 2-1 record. Saskatchewan lost 56-50 to the VK 13U from Vancouver to open the tournament. They defeated VK 13U 44-36 in the final.
They won the 14U/15U Division at the Prime Time Sports Clash in Calgary on July 11-12. They opened with three straight wins and then defeated Abbotsford’s Venom 14U 55-18 in the final. Jago was named the player of the game in a 46-34 win over Edmonton’s FCV Hoops Academy.
Dani Jackson is playing on the 17U Sask team, coached by Zenon Orobko, Logan Reider, and Jaden Cook.
They placed second with a 3-1 record in the 18U Division NPH Western Canada Showcase in Edmonton on June 12-14. They defeated St. Albert’s One Possession 17U 64-17. They added a 71-55 win over One Possession 18U when Jackson was named the player of the game. Saskatchewan lost 45-41 to Edmonton’s Good Hoops. They added a 68-52 win over Edmonton’s TNBA when Jackson was named player of the game again.
Saskatchewan 17U was also in Winnipeg for the Prairie Cup Challenge on June 27-28. They finished with a 2-1 record. They defeated Team Manitoba 17U 67-64, lost 52-49 to Stars 1, and beat Team Manitoba 17U again 56-50.
They finished with one win and one loss at the GT Cross Canada Invitational Tournament in Regina on July 10-12. Saskatchewan lost 72-61 to the University of Regina Prospects and defeated Team New Brunswick 93-31.
The 17U Girls won Varsity Division 1 at the Summer Closeout in Vancouver on July 17-19. They went 3-0 and then beat TriVision Elite 17U from Victoria 67-16 in the semi-final, with Jackson receiving player of the game honours. They beat TriVision Elite 18U 49-39 in the final.
The 17U Girls will next attend Basketball Canada’s Youth National Championships in Sherbrooke, QC from Aug. 2-8. Saskatchewan opens the tournament on Aug. 3 against Newfoundland and Labrador and then take on Prince Edward Island the following day.
