A pair of Southwest skaters were in action at the Telus Cup Western Regional in Regina on April 2-5.
Gull Lake’s Jamie Kirwan and Fox Valley’s Tyler Hudec helped the Moose Jaw U18 AAA Warriors place second amongst four teams from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.
The Warriors opened Western Regionals with a 6-3 win over the Winnipeg Bruins on Thursday. Kirwan had an assist on the opening goal during a two-assist outing.
They got some revenge on the host Pat Canadians with a 6-2 win on Friday. Kirwan assisted on a Chase Petersen goal to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead in the first period.
The Warriors wrapped up an unbeaten round robin with a 6-1 win over Thunder Bay on Saturday. Kirwan was named the Player of the Game with one goal and three assists.
The Warriors lost the final 5-1 to the Pat Canadians on Sunday. Kirwan scored the Warriors only goal on the power play in the second period. Maddox Schultz scored twice to lead the Pat Canadians to the victory. Regina will now head to the Telus Cup in Peterborough on April 20-26.
The Warriors finished second in the Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League regular season with a 37-5-1-1 record, only three points behind the Pat Canadians. They defeated the Battlefords Stars 3-0 to open the playoffs and then slipped past the Saskatoon Blazers 3-2. They lost the championship series 3-2 to the Pat Canadians as the series went to overtime in the first three games.
Kirwan finished the regular season with 12 goals and 24 assists in 43 games. He added seven assists in 13 playoff outings. He was a ninth round draft pick of the Swift Current Broncos in 2024 and appeared in three WHL games for the Broncos this season.
Hudec had 11 goals and 16 assists in 38 games on the blueline. He added two goals and three assists in the playoffs.
