The Swift Current Fencing Club will be hosting the Saskatchewan Fencing Association final tournament of the 2023-24 season, the Provincial Championships, on April 6-7.

The event will take place at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School gymnasium.

Over 90 athletes from across the province are expected to participate in three different weapon categories (Foil, Épée, Sabre) and seven different age categories ranging from Under 10 to Masters levels. Action begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 6 with bouts running until approximately 5 pm. Sunday’s competitions will run from 8:30 a.m. until approximately 4 p.m. See skfencing.ca for a complete schedule.

John Shurniak, SFA Executive Director says, “The Saskatchewan Fencing Association is looking forward to Swift Current hosting our biggest tournament of the season. It will be a great way to finish the season for the majority of our Fencers and culminates what has been a great year of growth, determination & excellence for our athletes, coaches & officials throughout
Saskatchewan.”

New to Fencing this season, Hayden Bucheler from Gull Lake, Saskatchewan, is excited about the upcoming tournament. “I met another deaf person who is a fencer and that made me more comfortable to give the sport a try. I really enjoy it! I look forward to continuing to progress in my skill development at the Provincials and always learn more from watching other fencers,” remarks Bucheler.

“Many locals are not familiar with the sport of Fencing and might not even know that we have a club in Swift Current, so we encourage them to stop in and see what the sport is all about. Admission is free for spectators, there will be a canteen onsite and the Fencing community is so friendly that if you have questions, any participant or parent would be happy to help explain the sport,” describes Denise Barbier, club president.
