18U AAA 57’s win home finale

The Swift Current 18U AAA 57’s played their final three home games in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League regular season, capping the weekend with a comeback win over the Saskatoon Diamondbacks. 

Saturday, the 57’s lost a back and forth contest 7-6 to the visiting Regina Wolfpack. The 57’s held the lead twice in the error-filled game, but the Wolfpack took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth inning to close the scoring.

Wyatt Harkes took the loss as he allowed 12 hits and seven runs, five that were earned, while striking out four without a walk over seven complete innings.

The 57’s combined six singles with eight walks and three errors to score their five runs. Riley Bowers led the way with two hits and two runs batted in. Cash Arntsen, Connor Choo-Foo, and Tyler Olfert all singled and scored.

Ethan Murdoch walked twice, scored, and had one RBI. Dawson Schultz walked twice, stole a base, and scored. Ben Patenaude singled, walked, and had one RBI. Kelsey Rokochy walked, scored, and added one RBI.

Sunday, the 57’s lost the opener 11-1 to the visiting Saskatoon Diamondbacks. Arntsen singled home Choo-Foo in the second inning for the only run. Choo-Foo, Rokochy, Murdoch, and Schultz also had hits in the loss.

The Diamondbacks combined eight hits with 10 walks and two errors to score in four innings, including a six-run sixth inning.

The 57’s replied in the second game with a comeback 6-3 win as the bottom three batters in the line-up combined for five hits. Dawson Schultz earned win as he pitched 6.2 innings without allowing an earned run. He struck out five while walking three and allowing six hits. Patenaude got the save after securing the final out.

Schultz finished the weekend fourth in the SPBL with 61 strikeouts.

Adair and Harkes each singled twice and scored a run. Nine-hole hitter Tyler Olfert singled, scored, and picked up two RBIs. Murdoch tripled and scored. Bowers singled, walked and scored. Arntsen also stole a base and scored, while Schultz had a pair of RBIs to help his own cause.

Murdoch was leading the league with a .742 slugging percentage and was third with a .438 batting average.

The 57’s (10-19) will play three games this weekend to conclude the regular season. They will visit the Regina Wolfpack (18-11) for two games on Saturday at Currie Field. They will also visit the South East Twins (8-19) on Sunday at Lynne Prime Field in Estevan.
