Former Swift Current Broncos goaltender Joel Hofer will represent his country for the first time. The 19-year-old Winnipeg native was one of three goaltenders named to Canada’s National Junior Team on Thursday. He is joined by Nico Daws (Guelph Storm) and Olivier Rodrigue (Moncton Wildcats).
The 6’5’’ Hofer leads the WHL with 20 wins and a 1.81 goals against average with the Portland Winterhawks. He is second with a 0.937 save percentage.
Hofer was a member of the 2018 WHL champion Broncos team and took over the starting duties the following season before being traded to Portland in exchange for six draft picks.
The 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship will take place in Ostrava and Trinec, Czech Republic from December 26 to January 5. Canada will open the tournament on Boxing Day against the United States.
