Southwest dominates Barrel Racing and Team Roping at Sandhill Rodeo

Southwest competitors won five events at the Sandhill Rodeo in Lancer on June 7-9. They had particular success in Ladies Barrel Racing and Team Roping at the Canadian Cowboys Association rodeo.

Southwest cowgirls swept the top three spots in Ladies Barrel Racing in Lancer. Shaunavon’s Haley Glasrud won the event in 15.14 seconds for a $1,200 payday. Eastend’s Bailee Humphrey wasn’t far off the pace in second in 15.17 seconds for $1,044. Cadillac’s Brooke Lang followed in third spot in 15.24 seconds for $887. Waldeck’s Mallory Mallert rounded out the money winners in eighth spot in 15.57 seconds for $104.

Southwest cowboys had a hand in three of the top entries in Team Roping at the Sandhill Rodeo as well. Waldeck’s Tee McLeod worked with Trey Gallais (Sundre, AB) to win the event in 6.1 seconds for $1,863. Scott McLeod had his own Alberta partner to get into the money. He worked with Taylor Wudrich (Bow Island, AB) to place sixth in 7.7 seconds for $648. Swift Current’s Blaine Switzer teamed up with Zane Marcenko (Rockglen) to finish in eighth in 11.6 seconds for $162.

Piapot’s Casey Bertram earned an event win in his corner of the province when he rode Citywide for 76 points to win Saddlebronc and an $803 payday. Maple Creek’s Mike Gordon was right behind him in second spot with a 71-point ride on Way North for $726.

Maple Creek’s James Perrin added an event win in Junior Steer Riding with 71 points for $388.

Kyle’s Kade Cheney also won Novice Saddle Bronc with 60 points for $285.

Maple Creek’s Brady Bertram added a second-place finish in Bareback with 78 points aboard Sand Hill City for $480.

Chad Hantelman led the Southwest in Steer Wrestling. The veteran Kyle cowboy tied for third in 7.3 seconds for $341. Tee McLeod was fifth in 7.4 seconds for $186.

A pair of Southwest cowboys were in the pay window in Tie Down Roping in Lancer. Waldeck’s Tuftin McLeod finished fifth in 10.7 seconds for $299. Blaine Switzer placed sixth in 10.8 seconds for $166.

There are CCA rodeos in Pilot Butte, Coutts, and Radville this weekend.
