Lacroix slugs his way to silver at Canada Games

Janick Lacroix, formerly of Ponteix, won a silver medal in boxing at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

Lacroix, now boxing out of the Medicine Hat Boxing Club, won his first two bouts for the host province before losing a three-round slugfest to Ontario’s Moe Zawaldi in the 75 KG gold medal bout on Thursday. Lacroix, 16, won 29-28 on two judges’ cards, but Zawaldi came out on top 29-27, 29-28, and 30-27 on the other cards.

Lacroix had opened the event on Sunday with a referee stopped contest over Newfoundland’s James Thornes in the opening round.

He won all three rounds on four of five judges’ cards in the semi-final in a 5-0 decision over British Columbia’s Jonathan Hannah on Monday.

Lacroix had an incredible 2018 when he won Nationals, the Golden Gloves/Golden Boy, and the Roy Jones Jr Boxing Tournament. He spent his early years training in Ponteix under the late Mike Kucik in the Grassland Boxing Club.
