The Swift Current Broncos continued to reshape their roster on Monday when sent an overage player to the Western Conference and signed an import defenseman.
The defending Western Hockey League champions dealt overage defenseman Sahvan Khaira to Everett Silvertips for 19-year-old forward Ethan O’Rourke and a third round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft.
“The Broncos would like to thank Sahvan for his services in Swift Current,” said Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Dean Brockman in a statement.
The Surrey, BC product has suited up in 245 career WHL contests to date, collecting 57 points and 283 penalty minutes for the Seattle Thunderbirds and Swift Current Broncos.
O’Rourke is a 6’5’’, 210-pound right-wing from Penticton, BC. He registered six goals and 12 assists in 66 games with the Prince George Cougars and Silvertips last season.
The Broncos also announced that they have come to terms with Roope Pynonnen, signing the Finnish blue liner to a Standard Player Agreement.
They chose Pynnonen 119th in the 2018 CHL Import Draft. The 17-year-old defenseman played the majority of his 2017-18 campaign in the Jr. B SM-sarja league with the HPK U18 squad. The 5’10”, 183lb rear guard posted two helpers in 16 games.
In 2016-17, the product of Tampere, Finland served as an alternate captain for the Ilves U-16 team of the Jr. C SM-sarja Q in which he registered 14 points (5g-9a) in 17 games.
With the signing of Pynnonen, the Broncos now have both of their 2018 CHL Import picks under contract after having signed Finnish forward Joona Kiviniemi last week.
