Midget 57’s shut down Giants

The Swift Current Midget 57’s allowed only seven hits in a two-game sweep of the visiting Saskatoon Giants in the Saskatchewan Premier Midget AAA Baseball League on Saturday.

The 57’s got two strong pitching performances from Jackson Fraser and Nolan Klein in a 6-4 win in the opening game.

The 57’s scored twice in the first inning and then added four runs in the fourth inning while holding the Giants to three hits.

Fraser got the win after holding the Giants to one run with four strikeouts over three innings. Klein pitched the final four innings, allowing three hits, four walks, and three runs, two that were earned, while striking out three.

Catcher Brock Wall led the 57’s with three hits and two runs batted in. Klein finished with two hits, including a double, one walk, and scored a run. Brody Alexandre walked twice, doubled, scored twice, and knocked home a run. Logan Fritzke doubled, scored, and picked up one run batted in.

The 57’s followed up with an 8-3 win in the back half, led by a dominant performance from Fritzke on the mound and at the plate. The veteran allowed only three hits and three runs, two that were earned, while striking out five over six innings. He also homered and doubled, stole a base, scored twice, and knocked home three runs.

Alexandre pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close things out.

The 57’s stole seven bases, including a pair from leadoff man Quinn Patenaude, who finished with two hits, two runs scored, and one walk. Nic Bachiu and Fraser both tripled, scored, and had one RBI.

The 57’s improved to 6-12, while the Giants dropped to 6-9.

The 57’s will be in Regina on Sunday to visit the Wolfpack for a double header.
