Logan Flodell made 39 saves and Tyler Steenbergen scored twice as the Swift Current Broncos edged the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-3 in a battle of two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference Friday.
The visiting Broncos finished two-for-four on the power play while killing off all five shorthanded situations in the win.
The Broncos were outshot 15-7 in the opening frame but emerged with a 3-1 lead. Tyler Steenbergen open the scoring midway through the period for the Broncos but Max Gerlach quickly tied the game.
Steenbergen reached the 30-goal plateau with 13 seconds left in the period and then Conner Chaulk notched his fourth goal of the season only eight seconds later.
Mark Rassell scored the only goal of the second period for the Tigers for a one-goal game heading into the third period.
Swift Current’s Aleksi Heponiemi scored on the power play early in the third period, his 16th goal of the season. Gary Hadden quickly replied for the Tigers to to close the scoring.
Flodell made 39 saves on 42 shots to improve to 13-3-1-0 for the Broncos, tied for the WHL lead in wins. Michael Buillon allowed four goals on 16 shots to fall to 5–4-0-0.
The Broncos improved to 14-4-1-0 with their fourth win in the past five games, while Medicine Hat dropped to 13–7-0-0 to lead the Central Division.
Steenbergen continues to lead the league with 30 goals and is tied for the league lead in points with 51. Heponiemi had three points and is also tied the league lead in points while leading the league with 35 assists. Captain Glenn Gawdin had two assists and is third in league scoring with 42 points.
The Broncos will host the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday.
